Civil War Numismatics

The clock turns back 150 years to the Civil War at the The Central States Numismatic Society's Spring Seminar April 10 in the heart of the Ozarks.

The daylong seminar, co-sponored by the Ozarks Coin Club of Springfield, Mo., will feature presentations on the politics, tokens and paper money of the War Between the States.

Civil War Numismatics seminar speakers will include Wendell Wolka of Greenwood, Ind.; Dennis Haskett of Noblesville, Ind.; and Norm Bowers of St. Louis.

Wolka, known for his entertaining educational presentations on paper money, will talk about Civil War politics, banking and currency. Civil War token experts Haskett and Bowers will discuss the wartime emergency issues and display their extensive collections.

The seminar will be held at the Keeter Center on the campus of College of the Ozarks, about 10 miles south of Branson, Mo. The seminar begins at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and ends at 4 p.m. There will be a noon break for lunch in a private dining room in the Keeter Center Lodge.

The seminar will be held in the Clark Room, with the adjacent Mitchell Room available for "bull sessions" during seminar breaks. CSNS Education Director Ray Lockwood anticipates extensive "show and tell" opportunities.

"All Civil War token collectors, paper money collectors and enthusiasts are invited and encouraged to attend," he said.

The Civil War seminar kicks off the fifth year of Central States seminars. The club's first seminar was in the fall of 2006 at Okojobi, Iowa. Since then, the club hase sponsored two seminars a year at various sites throughout the Central States region.

Registration for the Civil War Numismatics seminar is $10 for Central States members, and $20 for non-members (of which $10 may be applied to a one-year Central States membership).

Rooms are available at the historic Keeter Center Lodge at a reduced rate, and also at the College of the Ozarks' Good Center motel facility on the campus.
