Ray Lockwood

Ray Lockwood passed away on March 29th 2018 at the age of 79.

I would like to post Remembrances of Ray from people who knew him. He was a great guy and an avid numismatists who shared collecting "encased coins" with me. He was a friend, a fellow collector and a mentor in many ways. He will be missed. (Bruce Perdue, Past President, Webmaster and Friend)

From Kevin Foley - "As Convention Chairman I worked closely with Ray Lockwood each year to plan and implement our Educational Forum at the convention. Ray was always a delight to work with, doing what he said he would do when he said he would do it, having constructive and thoughtful suggestions as to how things could be improved.and just generally always keeping in sight the goal of doing things in a way that would have a positive ultimate impact on the convention and larger organization. I'll miss his sound judgment, clever wit and, very simply, his general good nature. The organization was enriched by his contributions and will continue to be long into the future."

From Bradley Karoleff - "I will miss that baritone voice of welcome. Ray encouraged me to become more involved with CSNS. "

From Wayne Homren (Editor of the NBS E-Sylum) - "Sorry to hear the news. Ray was the CSNS education director and shepherded the Central States Author Grants program, which provides assistance to authors researching numismatic books."

Carl Wolf of the Chicago Coin Club wrote: Word arrived that Walter Ray Lockwood (member 1256) passed away early this morning. He was 79 years of age. Ray was a long time member of the Central States Numismatic Society, served many offices and for many years as a Governor, Education Chair and assisted his wife Fran with the convention exhibits. He was a collector of many numismatic subjects, including polymer banknotes. At the Chicago Coin Club's November 21, 2015 meeting held in conjunction with the PCDA National Currency and Coin Convention Ray gave a well received presentation on this subject. The next day Ray chaired the CSNS Numismatic Educational Symposium titled 'Tales of Gold, Greed, Gangsters and Wartime on the Prairie.' He was a constant presence at CSNS conventions for many years and will be dearly missed.

ANA Governor and PAN President Tom Uram wrote: Ray was a great gentleman and loved to share his numismatic interest. Fran and Ray were the first re-introduction I had had to exhibiting and we became good friends as well. That’s what our hobby is about, especially those of us in the Numismatic exhibit fraternity. He will be missed but remembered.

Scott E Douglas ONA President- I first met Ray a few years ago in Canada when he attended a Royal Canadian Numismatic Association convention with his lovely wife Fran. As the Education Chairman for both the RCNA and the Ontario Numismatic Association, I found we both had a lot in common. I immediately liked Ray and his easy wit as well as his infectious enthusiasm. Ray was indeed a true gentleman and I will miss him as I am sure so many others will. We have lost one of the good ones. Rest in Peace, my American friend.

Al Raddi, HVNS Board Member - Ray was a good friend of the Huron Valley Numismatic Society (HVNS) in Highland, MI. He brought interesting seminars to our area, made our participation in the CSNS Speaker, DVD, and Library Books Programs very easy, and visited us a couple years back and gave an excellent presentation on polymer notes. We'll miss him.
